As master Yoda (Star Wars) said “Do or do not, there is no try”.
How many times have you heard people say “I’ll try” or “I’ll give it a try”? How many times have you said it yourself?
By “trying” to do something you are already allowing and even encouraging defeat and failure before you start. The reason why I say this is that you use the fact that you tried or attempted to do it as an excuse. That way you can at least tell people you tried even when you don’t succeed. The problem with this is that most of the time you are already content enough with knowing that you tried, that you do not give your full 100% effort to do whatever it is you are trying to do.
If you are going to attempt it, you do it fully and with 100% energy and enthusiasm. If you are not going to give it your all, then rather do not do it at all. By trying something and doing it half-assed, more often than not, you either waste a lot of time and energy or you create more problems than were there before you started.
When you take the attitude that you are going to DO something (not try), it does not mean that it is not possible to fail. The point is that you focus on completing it, you are going to DO that thing. You focus on the positive and not on the negative of what could all go wrong. The mind is a very powerful thing. Whatever you focus on in your mind is what tends to materialize in your reality.
If you are cornering a road at a high speed in a car and you focus on being scared of hitting the curb, most likely you will hit it. However if you focus on clearing the corner, and look at where you want to end up instead of where you are going currently, then your body and mind will automatically make the adjustments and steer the car to where you want it to go. This way you may just clear that corner perfectly whereas you would not if you had focused on being scared of hitting the curb.
Why So Many People Fail
This is why so many people always fail to achieve their big plans and dreams.
For example people would talk about quitting their job and making a living online. The idea sounds appealing: the dream of not having to go to work, being able to live off money that they make from websites from working anywhere in the world. In short…they are hooked.
The excitement is there. They read a pitch page from a guy who is selling his guide that claims to have them making thousands of dollars online within a few weeks. They buy the guide and realize that it probably isn’t enough information, so they carry on searching for more guides, more information. They spend hours and days reading these books and guides that they have spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars on.
The majority of these people will try the method or multiple methods outlined in the various guides that they have read. They will start multiple projects only to see none of them through to the end. They give up after a few weeks or months of putting in a lot of effort without seeing any real results. The blame is often placed on the guide being scammy (most of these make money online guides are indeed very generic except for Cloud Living). Then, one day, when someone asks them why they never quit their jobs they hated and started for themselves, they will answer that they did once, they tried but failed.
Most of the time when someone failed but says that they tried, they know they did not really try. If they answer honestly, they will say that they did not give it their all and full 100% effort.
“Two Things Will Happen:”
Will Smith has an awesome wisdom about life where he describes his determination when he starts something. He too, like Master Yoda, shares the view of “Do or Do Not, There Is No Try”.
“Either the other guys gets off the treadmill first or I will die on this treadmill”
Will says that someone may be smarter than him, better than him or more talented than him, but if he gets on a treadmill to compete with someone then one of two things will happen: The other guy will get off the treadmill first or Will Smith will die on that treadmill. Now that may be a bit extreme, but it is definitely the kind of mindset that will get you to do something as best as you can.
I’m sure that most of you know who Will Smith is and you have seen some of his movies or interviews. Besides the fact that he is a very cool guy, he is incredibly successful. He practices what he preaches. To me it seems like a good idea to follow some of his morals and wisdoms.
The Lesson To Take Home
There are two ways to do anything in life the right way. You either do it, or you do not do it at all. There is no point in trying to do something (with the exception of trying new food but even then, you are eating the new food and not trying to eat it).
Even if you fail once you have decided to do something, then at least you gave it your full 100% effort. Then just get back on your feet and do it again.
